A little preparation before painting day helps the job start on time and finish faster. Professional painters will protect your floors and furniture, but these simple steps make a big difference.
Inside the Home
- Remove small items, ornaments, photos and artwork from the rooms being painted
- Move smaller furniture out of the room if you can, and push larger pieces to the centre
- Take down curtains and blinds near the walls
- Unplug and move electronics away from walls
- Let your painter know about any marks, cracks or areas you want extra attention on
- Plan where kids and pets will be while work is underway
Outside the Home
- Trim plants and shrubs away from walls and fences
- Move outdoor furniture, pot plants and barbecues away from the house
- Clear access paths and side gates
- Turn off sprinklers on painting days
- Let neighbours know if access or ladders may be close to the fence line
Agree the Details in Writing
Before work starts, confirm colours, sheen levels, which rooms or areas are included and the expected timeline. A written, itemised quote avoids misunderstandings. Read our guide on how to choose a painter in Melbourne.
After the Job
Keep a small amount of each colour for future touch-ups and note the brand, colour name and finish. Wait for paint to cure before hanging heavy artwork or scrubbing walls.
